Snowboarding or Shredding as this sport is an attractive alternative to the other two sports members of the board trilogy. Skating in the street is perceived as counter culture & only for the young, while surfing is open to a larger age group. Surfing does have geographic limits/can only be done at the beach & is limited to the swimmers of the human race. Snowboarding is more open to non swimmers, a wide range of ages & is being marketed as a family product.

Snowboarders also have an interesting advantage over the other two members other board trilogy which lies in the snow environment. Snowboarding's transitional surfaces (half pipes, snow ramps) are easily shapeable month to month if not more frequently. Manpower or woman power can pick up shovels & make the ramp from the white stuff. The magazines demonstrate snow ramps built against retaining walls, walls, & even buildings. After seeing that, I catch myself dreaming of potential snow culverts when 1 commute through freeway/expressway valleys in the northeast (if only the police would shut down the highway during a blizzard!).

BODY CONDITIONING
The Snowboarding body motions of this boardsport are similar to skating but fall between it skiing. They are focused on standing position, squatting/trunk rotation for turns. Physical conditioning priorities lie in conditioning the thigh muscles & lower leg muscles. Heel edging, like going from feet flat on floor to picking up only balls of feet is the foot motion. Heel edging puts unusual demands on the shin muscles. Toe edging does the other side & uses the calf muscle. These muscles should already be strong from everyday walking.

The following are names of the muscle groups:
1. Quadriceps/Vastus lateralis/front thigh muscles. Barbell squats condition these.

2. Anterior Tibialis/shin/"car-clutch" muscles. Picking balls of feet up or dorsiflexing feet will condition these muscles which are used very frequently in shredding.

3. Gastrocnemius/calf/back of lower leg work in toe edging. Little conditioning since used already for walking.

INJURY PREVENTION
From a board perspective Snowboarding is close to surfing since the board is very elegant, no trucks or wheels, more board contact to the earth. Reliance is heavily on the edges for control. While skating relies on some body rotation for turning, Snowboarding depends way more on the rotation.
In addition, the turn is more of a twisting/torquing motion to edge the snow. In fact, I learned to use layback slide motions a.k.a. skateboard Bert skate move (named after Hawaiian surfer Bert Bertelman).... to aggressively snowboard. It is here where I feel the excitement &
get stoked.

Safety equipment is pretty much the same as skateboarding... helmet, wristguards, elbow pads, knee pads, & padded pants. One difference in the use of padded shorts is the need for tail bone/coccyx protection. Newbie skate falling is most dangerous on the side on the hips. Newbie/nube snowboard falling will tend to be forward like going down for a push up for back on the buttocks.
